Gun safety is very important in today's society. Although in the United States of America you are constitutionally entitled to own a firearm, you are still responsible for keeping it safe and secure and out of the hands of children or people that should not be handling it. A great way to do this is to purchase and store your firearms in a gun safe. They are specifically designed to be highly secure and keep your guns or other belongings safe and are a perfect way to stay safe.

There are a number of different gun safes on the market today. You might be wondering, "How do I choose the best gun safe?" It is very important to choose a safe that both fits your needs and is proven to be secure. In order to help you make the best informed decision, I have a few tips and suggestions on what you should look for when shopping for the best gun safe. Before reading any gun safe reviews, there are few things you should consider.

Here is a list of the 4 main things you need to consider.

  1. The lock. There are a few different locking mechanisms available today. Among the most popular are biometric gun safes, which use fingerprint recognition technology for access to the safe. This is a very secure technology, as there are no physical keys or combinations to remember: you have to be physically at the safe yourself for it to open. Combination and digital keypad safes are also secure, too. You'll want to read reviews and make sure that you choose something proven to be secure. This is obviously the most important thing when it comes to choosing the best gun safe!
  2. Fireproofing/Waterproofing. Some gun safes are designed to be fire and/or water resistant. When designed as such, the manufacturer will give them a rating related to the amount of time the safe can be in fire or under water before being compromised. If keeping your guns or belongings safe from fire and water is important to you, definitely make sure to check out the fire and water proofing ratings of the available safes.
  3. Size and weight. The range of size and weight of gun safes is massive! They can range from shoebox-sized handgun safes which weigh a few pounds, to huge 1000+ pound safes capable of storing an entire collection of rifles. Of course, the bigger and heavier safe, the more secure it will be. It's not unheard of for thieves to chain a safe to their vehicle and pull it straight through the walls. However, if you only have a handgun, there is probably no point in purchasing a huge, expensive safe. Consider your needs, and go from there.
  4. Price. Just like the range of sizes, gun safes range greatly in prices, too. Figure out how much you want to budget into your purchase of the gun safe. Generally, the larger the safe, the more expensive it will cost. Expect to pay at least $150 for a good handgun safe, and upwards of $1000 for a good, full sized safe.

Buying a gun safe is a big decision and a big investment, and it's important to know exactly what you need before making a purchase. Take these things into consideration before doing your research and you should have a very good idea of what you need.

Yes, I totally agree. We don't own a gun, either, but we use a gun safe to store some of our valuables and heirlooms that have been passed down through our family. You might feel like you're safe without one, but you might change your mind when someone breaks into your house...

Very good hub. Gun safes are the responsible thing to own when owning a gun.
